Day 10- No change and view on “disabilities”

Ruby is about the same.  Her bottom seems to still be bothering her despite diarrhea improvement (mostly soft formed stools) but there is a “hot spot” on her backside where they got too close with the clippers and she has a teeny lil cut on her bum. So she tries to “run away” from her bottom which is sort of funny in a pitiful way.  Her incision although dry, looks horrible. It’s black and crusty and dry.  We go tomorrow am and I am not sure if they will Debride it right then and there or we will have to come back.  She is till fairly “puny” acting and we can’t wait til this is all over and she can just be a normal, abnormal Tripawd.

I took her to the dog park yesterday on the leash to just sort of get out of the house and sniff around some other dogs.  I found it so interesting how people at the park looked at her, most with pity. But some even called their dogs back and I heard comments like “oh stay away she has something going on” and “oh she doesn’t want to play with you”. Some of these folks even sort of looked away. It really opened my eyes to how people with disabilities must be treated all the time. It was a real eye-opener.  For Ruby, it was just what she needed a as she seemed to enjoy just being out.

More tomorrow after our big appointment.

  1. Yes, people can be cruel in their ignorance. I have not been totally successful in growing a thick skin where these comments are concerned, and it’s been over 2 years for us. They still bother me, but that’s one of the many reasons I love this site so much…..NO JUDGEMENT, just understanding. Living well is the best revenge, and I wish you and Ruby WELL!

  2. Ruby does look really happy to be out at the bark park – I am so glad you went.

But I do know just what you mean about the pitying looks or the looking away and how that makes you think about what it is like to be a human with a disability. Honestly, we got more of the pity looks when Pofi still had the leg and was badly limping. I felt sometimes then like people were conferring in hushed tones as if I didn’t know he was limping or I didn’t care and was doing nothing about it. I found myself announcing to people, “He’s had a toe amputation. We are doing rehab.”

I posted a picture of him just a few days post amp on our bark park’s FB page letting people know we had a new diagnosis and the result, but that he was already feeling much better. I have found that now that the fur is growing back in, people concentrate more on the positive of how well he gets around and how wonderful they think it is that we did this for him and he is without pain again. As Ruby heals up some more, you may find the same positivity from people rather than the stolen sympathy glances.

But it really is about Ruby – she doesn’t notice any of that. She’s just happy to be with you and out and about!

  3. Ruby is so beautiful…beautiful inside and out!! You really can see she has a gentle Soul.

I would insist the vets check her out thoroughly and make sure she isn’t having any anal gland issues, rectum issues and check out that “hot spot” thoroughly!

I’m really glad she’s going to the vet tomorrow and getting all ner “issues”‘treated…whatever that may involve.

Will look for your updates……..always with beautiful pictures of course!

    Hugs!
